“The kids are sad about the loss but upbeat about the tournament as a whole,” coach Gregg Hirata said.

Jarrett Tulang hit a home run and Mason Hirata collected two hits for Hilo, which finished 3-2 at the tournament and fell a game short of the title game.

“Placing third was a great accomplishment,” Hirata said of the state champions.

Hilo has won states four of the past five years but has yet to have a team get past West Zone.

• Colt: Hilo stayed alive at the PONY West Zone 16U tournament in San Jose Calif., beating the San Diego Q-Jays 7-3.

Donald Saltiban got the victory with 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out five and allowing just one hit

Pu’ukani De Sa was 4 for 5 with a double and three RBIs to lead Hilo’s offense, and Delvin Ongais-Kilaulani had two hits.

Starting pitcher Nainoa Kane-Yates worked 3 1/3 inning.

On Monday, Hilo matches up again with a Los Gatos Legends team that beat it 15-0 on Saturday.

• Soccer: With eight Big Island players in the fold, Oahu’s Hawaii Surf Club advanced to the semifinals Sunday at the Surf Cup in San Diego.

Hawaii Prep’s HPA’s Emi Higgins scored a goal in a 1-0 victory Saturday.
